Is it worth reading a full repair guide before taking my Audi to a workshop? - broganellis - 10-09-2026 My brother and I had a small argument over this on Friday, so I decided to ask people who actually own these cars. I drive a 2016 Audi A4 with around 96,000 km, and lately the gearbox gives a soft knock when it shifts down as I slow for a roundabout. It is not loud and it does not happen every day, but I noticed it. My brother says I should just drive to the workshop and let them tell me what it is, because reading online only makes people panic. I disagree, since I walked into a garage once knowing nothing and left with a bill I could not explain. So I spent a couple of evenings reading, and found a Professional Audi transmission repair guide for Musaffah owners that explained the steps of a typical job, like the scan first, then the road test, then opening the unit only if needed. It helped me understand the order of things, but I still do not know how much of it is normal practice and how much is just what one place says. So here are my questions for people who have done this before. Is it normal for a workshop to explain each step before starting, or do most just give a price and a phone call later? Do they usually keep the old parts to show you afterward, and is it rude to ask for that? Also, how long should a proper diagnosis take, an hour or a full day? My neighbor Sufyan says a good place will not rush and will tell you what they found even if the answer is that nothing is wrong. I would also like to know if you take notes or photos of the dashboard before handing the keys over, since that might help if there is a disagreement later. And if you read up before your visit, did it help you ask better questions, or did it just make you more nervous? I would really like honest stories from people who went in prepared and from people who went in blind. |
